Canadian Company Creates Emergency Management Solution from the DK-ActiveX
Vancouver, Canada November 04, 2003

The "EmerGeo" internet-based emergency mapping solution is a client-server application created from the DK-ActiveX toolkit. EmerGeo is based on the most recent DK-ActiveX 8 beta version. The developer of the EmerGeo product has been a DK-ActiveX licensed user since May, 2003.

Vancouver, BC -- EmerGeo Solutions Inc. of North Vancouver, B.C. has developed a new internet-based emergency mapping application called EmerGeo.

EmerGeo was recently put to the test during a citywide disaster exercise in the City of Vancouver. A large wildland fire started by an overturned gasoline tanker caused the evacuation of hundreds of residents. To make matters worse, a gas main burst in the area released flammable materials into the air. This scenario was a smaller scale version of BCs worst wildland fires this summer.

EmerGeo was used to maintain a situation map for all the city emergency responders working in the Emergency Operation Centre. Fire, Police, Engineering and other departments could access their own version of these maps to plan their response actions and publish critic al information such as evacuation areas and road closures to the situation map so all decision-makers had a common operating picture.

This web-based mapping program was also donated to the B.C. Ministry Regional Operations Centre (MROC) this summer in support of the fire fighting efforts. We saw provincial government web sites describing evacuation alert areas by listing streets and landmarks as boundaries. We recognized that emergency planners could use this tool to effectively communicate critical information. Using EmerGeo, evacuation areas, locations of special needs populations who may need help evacuating, evacuation routes and other critical information can be communicated in real-time to anyone with approved access, a web browser with internet connection, explains Mike Morrow of EmerGeo Solutions. We were fortunate to be able to deliver mapping data with our application through a generous donation from a leading commercial mapping data supplier in Canada, DMTI Spatial Inc., Morrow states.

ANNUAL URISA CONFERENCE

The 41st Annual Conference of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) will take place October 11-15, 2003 in Atlanta, Georgia and the conference program is now available (www.urisa.org).

Join your peers at the Marriott Marquis, in the heart of downtown Atlanta, to share success stories and challenges and learn from each other. URISA 2003 will provide a diverse program of technical sessions, workshops, social events, exhibits, and networking opportunities while providing a forum for highlighting best practices from around the world that improve urban and regional environments through the utilization of GIS and IT approaches and methods.

The key subject areas that will be covered in educational sessions include: e-Government; Public Health; Enterprise Operations; Transportation Systems; Public Works; Economic Development; Natural Resources; Asset Management; Homeland Security; Emergency Operations; Policy Planning; Urban and Regional Planning; Partnerships; Social, Cultural, and Environmental Planning; and other Hot Topic Areas.

..and an important follow-up session to URISA's Summit on promoting national data partnerships and collaboration!

URISA's Certified Workshops have long been considered some of the best real world and practical learning experience for attendees. And over the past year, URISA Workshops have been substantially updated and improved. Attendance at one preconference workshop is included with full registration. Be sure to take advantage of this comprehensive educational opportunity in Atlanta.

Another highlight of the conference will be the introduction of the first class of Certified GIS Professionals! Ample opportunity will be available to find out the details of the program and get yourself ready to apply for certification at the end of this year.

You won't want to miss this conference, so make your plans to attend today.

Blue Marble Geographics

Blue Marble Geographic Calculator
The leading coordinate conversion tool world-wide. You can transform between coordinate systems, calculate the distance and azimuth between two coordinates, compute grid convergence, point scale factor, datum shifts and grid shifts.

Over the last ten years the Geographic Calculator has become the standard tool for coordinate conversion worldwide. You should have this product in your toolbox!

The Geographic Calculator converts individual coordinates, point databases, and map files from virtually any coordinate system, datum, and map projection to any other.

You can transform between coordinate systems, calculate the distance and azimuth between coordinates, and calculate coordinates at a known distance and azimuth from known coordinates. The Geographic Calculator also computes grid convergence, point scale factor, datum shifts, and grid shifts. Of course, the Geographic Calculator is professionally documented and supported.

The City of Edmonton uses Intergraph

The city of Edmonton reorganized its entire IT infrastructure in 1997 with the goals to merge all IT activities into one branch and to search for and reduce redundant applications. Over 300 applications were identified, of which 85 were land based. City managers were particularly concerned with the number of redundant land-based solutions because an efficient data core of land use information is central for effective citywide asset management.

Already well-grounded in GIS and Intergraph’s Modular GIS Environment (MGE) technology, the issue for the city was how to improve the use and efficiency of its land applications.

All implemented electronic solutions since 1978 were developed and maintained within individual city departments, and officials realized city services could improve if personnel could access and share data from a reliable, central data pool.
